Mendihuaca is a small beach destination on Colombia’s Caribbean coast located between Santa Marta and Palomino, approximately 10 minutes from the main entrance of Tayrona National Park. It is best known for its surf-friendly beach, the point where the Mendihuaca River meets the Caribbean Sea, and its laid-back atmosphere.
If you’re doing any research for your Colombian itinerary, I’m sure you’ve heard of Tayrona National Park, Palomino or Santa Marta… But between these well-known stops lies a stretch of coastline most travellers pass through without realising it exists properly as a destination. One such place is Mendihuaca. It’s a quiet coastal village located 10 mins east from the main entrance of Tayrona National Park and only an hour from Santa Marta. It is where the Mendihuaca River meets the Caribbean Sea. The vibe it creates is a jungle, river, surf town, quiet beach hang out.
It is a scattered collection of surf camps, eco-lodges and beach access points spread along the coastline. We originally discovered Mendihuaca while looking at Google Maps for places to stay near Tayrona National Park. It was a very pleasant addition to our itinerary.

Mendihuaca is located on Colombia’s Caribbean coast between Santa Marta and Palomino, approximately 10 minutes from the main entrance of Tayrona National Park. Conveniently located along the coastal highway. A cool feature of this village is at its edge is the Mendihuaca river that flows from down the Sierra Nevada mountain range. That river joins to the Caribbean sea, creating this beautiful landscape of jungle, river and surf.
Most people whom have travelled along the coastal highway, wouldn’t have realised they have just gone past Mendihuaca.

If you’re interested in a quieter, more laid back alternative to Tayrona or Palomino, then absolutely. It’s best suited for people looking for a hidden gem just off a very touristy route or surfers. There isn’t too many restaurants or shops long its sandy roads so if you’re looking for a party, this isn’t the place for you. It is closely located to Tayrona National Park so you could visit it on a day trip and return back to your quiet beachside paradise.

How Many Days Do You Need in Mendihuaca?
If you plan on surfing, exploring the trails nearby and doing a day trip to Tayrona National Park, then I would advise a minimum of 3 nights here. Because it’s quite isolated, WIFI/internet connection can be spotty with bad weather. so I probably wouldn’t advise it for stopping long term here for slow travel. A couple of days is perfect to unwind, slow day and relax.

It is worth noting that the mototaxi can take you and your large backpack down.
Things to Do in Mendihuaca

Swim where the river meets the sea
The ocean can be pretty rough for a lot of casual swimmers and non-surfers. However, there is a river right next to the town that is calm and perfect to relax… It’s a good spot to cool off from the heat!
Take a day trip to Tayrona
For many, the main purpose of this region is a trip to Tayrona National Park. It’s really easy to visit from Mendihuaca with a ±10 min mototaxi ride to the main entrance.
Learn to surf
Fancy catching some waves? There are a few surf hostels and camps located along the beach. Plenty of them offer lessons and surfboard rentals.
Walk the beach at sunset
The beach is a pretty compact area but you can take a stroll either direction and watch the sunset. A rather romantic activity to do either with a loved one or by yourself – embrace your main character energy.
Relax in a beachfront hammock
I spent plenty of time doing this. It’s probably be one of the few places I completely unwind at.
Visit nearby waterfalls
There are a few waterfalls nearby that you can visit by taking a short walk into the jungle. Some accommodations can offer to organise for someone who knows the best way to find these hidden gems.
Best Time to Visit Mendihuaca
Colombia’s dry season is from December to April. During this time, seas are calmer, beach conditions are better. But that being said, the Caribbean coast can be visited year round. We were there end of May and had some lovely days – some cloudy days but still very hot and humid.
If you’re visiting during rainy season, expect for rain to come in short tropical bursts… it’s not quite an all-day downpour.

Practical Information for Visiting Mendihuaca
Cash vs Card
Cash is essential in these parts of Colombia. Most accommodations, transportation, restaurants and shops either prefer or only accept cash. There are some accommodations you can book and pay online through. If you plan to show up without a booking, make sure to carry enough with you to last the time you’re there.
Are there ATMs?
Not anywhere nearby. There are no ATMs in Mendihuaca itself so it’s best to withdraw cash in Santa Marta before arriving.
Internet and WiFi
WiFi is available in most accommodations, but quality varies significantly! Our accommodation had decent connection but would occasionally drop out. In some restaurants we visited, it just wasn’t working. It is not ideal for heavy remote work unless you specifically choose accommodation with strong reviews for connectivity.
SIM Cards and Mobile Signal
Mobile signal is generally usable near the main road. We used Airalo eSIM and in some parts of the beaches, the signal would drop out with some general hotspots. But generally, it was usable to send messages while we were away from our accommodation.
Getting around
Mendihuaca is small and walkable once you are settled. Everything is along the beach and takes a max of 7 mins to walk from end to end. From the highway to the beach, it’s a short mototaxi ride or about 25 mins walk. At the Sonrisa de Mar parking, there’s a mototaxi stand that you can easily arrange transport (mototaxi) for to get to different places.
Getting to the main entrance of Tayrona National Park takes ±10 mins and costs 15000 COP per person.
Is Mendihuaca good for solo travellers?
Yes, although Mendihuaca attracts a different type of traveller than nearby Palomino. If you’re someone looking for a party scene, this isn’t it. It is a calm and social environment. There are hostels but when we were there, there wasn’t too many travellers. It’s a spot for surfers, slow travellers and couples.
Do you need Spanish?
No but it will definitely help… Basic Spanish will make transport, ordering food and small interactions much easier. You can manage with limited Spanish but probably struggle a bit. Make sure you download an offline version of your translator app so you can use it without any connectivity.
Is Mendihuaca expensive?
It is relatively affordable compared to nearby tourist hotspots. Definitely a lot more affordable than places like Cartagena. A meal was generally less than 100,000 COP with beers costing 7000 COP. For accommodation, we saw in lodges in Tayrona costing significantly more than our private beachfront room, which had cost less than £30 per night.
Example Costs
Beer: 7000 COP
Dinner: 35000 – 50000 COP per person
Accommodation: £30 for a private beach front accommodation
Mototaxi: 6000 COP to the highway | 15000 COP to Tayrona National Park
Is Mendihuaca a Good Base for Visiting Tayrona National Park?
Yes, Mendihuaca makes an excellent base for visiting Tayrona National Park… particularly if you’re looking to avoid the crowds and higher accommodation prices closer to the park entrances! Located just 10 minutes by mototaxi from Tayrona’s main entrance, it’s easy to visit the park as a day trip before returning to your slice of paradise in the evening. During our stay, we found Mendihuaca offered the best of both worlds: easy access to one of Colombia’s most famous national parks while still feeling peaceful and removed from the busy tourist trail.
If you’re planning to spend a full day hiking to beaches such as Cabo San Juan or La Piscina, returning to a beachfront hammock and the sound of the river meeting the sea is hard to beat. For many, staying in Mendihuaca can be a more relaxed and affordable alternative to staying directly outside Tayrona.

Is Mendihuaca safe?
We found Mendihuaca to be one of the safest-feeling places we visited on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Crime did not appear to be a significant concern during our stay, although normal precautions should still be taken. It’s a small surf town where it seems like everyone knows everyone. The main consideration here are actually environmental. The ocean currents were definitely quite strong, we decided not to swim in the ocean. Thankfully, there is the river a few seconds from the beach which was perfect.
We personally felt comfortable enough to actually leave our small bag on the shore while going for a dip in the river. But if you do that, just keep an eye on your things and don’t go swimming too far!
Where to stay in Mendihuaca
Accommodation is spread along the coastline rather than in a “town centre”. There are a couple of surf hostels, ecolodges and small boutique accommodations.
What’s Special About Mendihuaca?
Mendihuaca is not a destination built around attractions or sightseeing. Its appeal definitely comes from its simplicity. It is a stretch of Colombia’s Caribbean coast where jungle, river and ocean meet without the infrastructure of a major tourist hub. You can wake up near the sea, walk quiet beaches, swim in the river and watch the mountains fade into the horizon. Sounds super lush! And all this without massive crowds.
While many travellers pass through on their way to Tayrona or Palomino, Mendihuaca is one of those places that quietly rewards people who stop.
