Here’s exactly how to join Turkish Airlines TourIstanbul, who is eligible, whether you need a visa, what happens to your luggage and what to expect during the process.

Planning a flight with Turkish Airlines and have a long layover in Istanbul? You might have come across TourIstanbul – the airline’s complimentary city tour for eligible transit passengers. Instead of spending hours waiting at the airport, you can leave the terminal, explore some of Istanbul’s most famous landmarks, enjoy a traditional Turkish meal and return in plenty of time for your next flight – all for free! Sounds too good to be true, right?

Naturally, offers like this raise a few questions. Who can join? Do you need to book in advance? What happens to your luggage? Can you really leave the airport during a layover? And perhaps most importantly, will you actually have enough time to make your connecting flight?

Well, I’ve personally tested it out whilst flying from London to Singapore during my 13 hour layover. While Turkish Airlines does a decent job of explaining the programme on its website, I still found myself searching for answers from someone who’d actually done it. This guide brings everything together in one place, explaining exactly how TourIstanbul works, who is eligible, how to register, what happens to your luggage and what you can expect on the day. Whether you’re travelling from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, the USA or anywhere else, the process is exactly the same.

This guide focuses purely on how to join Turkish Airlines’ TourIstanbul, so you can decide if it’s the right way to spend your layover.

What is Turkish Airlines’ TourIstanbul?

TourIstanbul is a complimentary sightseeing programme offered by Turkish Airlines for eligible international transit passengers with a layover at Istanbul Airport. Rather than spending hours waiting in the terminal, you can leave the airport and explore some of Istanbul’s most famous attractions on a guided tour – completely free of charge.

TourIstanbul is designed around your flight schedule. Turkish Airlines takes care of all the logistics: return transport between the airport and the city, an English-speaking guide, entry to any attractions on your itinerary and a traditional Turkish meal are all included before you’re driven back to the airport in time for your connecting flight.

Several different tours are available throughout the day, each following its own itinerary depending on the length and timing of your layover. Some focus on Istanbul’s historic centre while others include experiences like a Bosphorus cruise. The tour you’re eligible for depends on when your flight arrives and departs. For many travellers, especially those visiting Istanbul for the first time, it’s an easy way to experience one of the world’s most historic cities without extending their trip or booking an overnight stop.

Who is eligible for TourIstanbul?

You can’t simply arrive at Istanbul Airport and join any TourIstanbul departure. The programme is only available to passengers who meet Turkish Airlines’ eligibility requirements. Generally, you can join TourIstanbul if you:

- Are travelling on an international Turkish Airlines flight
- Have both flights booked under the same reservation (same PNR)
- Are connecting through Istanbul Airport (IST)
- Have a layover between 6 and 24 hours
- Have a connection that matches one of the scheduled TourIstanbul departure times
- Meet Türkiye’s entry requirements and are legally allowed to leave the airport

The most important thing to understand is that your layover length alone does not guarantee eligibility. Your arrival and departure times need to line up with one of the available TourIstanbul schedules. For example, a 10-hour layover might sound perfect, but if your arrival time falls just after a tour departure and your next flight leaves before the next available tour returns, you may not be able to participate.

Do you need a visa to join TourIstanbul?

Because Turkish Airlines’ TourIstanbul takes place outside Istanbul Airport, you are technically entering Türkiye. This means you must meet the same entry requirements as any other visitor arriving in the country. Depending on your passport, this may mean:

- Entering Türkiye visa-free
- Applying for an eVisa before travelling
- Obtaining a traditional visa

If you are not legally allowed to enter Türkiye, you will not be able to leave the airport or participate in TourIstanbul. Always check the latest requirements before travelling, as visa rules can change depending on your nationality.

Can economy class passengers join?

Yes. TourIstanbul is not limited to Business Class passengers. Whether you’re flying Economy, Premium Economy or Business Class, you can join the programme as long as your Turkish Airlines itinerary meets the eligibility requirements. The deciding factor is your flight itinerary and layover, not your cabin class.

Do you need to reserve before flying?

No. I had assumed I’d need to reserve my place weeks in advance. Instead, registration takes place after you arrive at Istanbul Airport at the dedicated Turkish Airlines’ TourIstanbul desk.

How to join TourIstanbul: Step by Step

Joining Turkish Airlines’ TourIstanbul is much easier than I expected. You don’t need to reserve a place weeks in advance, however – you do need to purchase one of the TourIstanbul qualifying flights. Instead, eligible passengers simply register after arriving at Istanbul Airport. Here is exactly how the process worked for me during my 13-hour layover between London and Singapore.

Step 1: Book an eligible TourIstanbul Turkish Airlines flight

The first step is making sure you are actually flying on an itinerary that qualifies for TourIstanbul. When booking your flights, look for a Turkish Airlines itinerary with a suitable layover at Istanbul Airport. Some eligible flights may display the TourIstanbul logo during the booking process.

Step 2: Check your eligibility before flying

Before your trip, visit the Turkish Airlines TourIstanbul page and make sure your layover qualifies. Verify your layover is between 6 – 24 hrs, booked with the TourIstanbul logo (your ticket number will begin with 235) and the trip is booked as one so you’ll have the same PNR (reservation code). The next thing to confirm is whether or not you’ll need a VISA, eVISA or no VISA. This will depend on your nationality.

Step 3: Arrive at Istanbul Airport

Once you land at Istanbul Airport, do not head towards your next departure gate. Instead, you need to officially enter Türkiye. Follow the signs towards: Passport Control → Arrivals → Customs

You might feel like you’re doing something wrong if you’ve never left an airport during a layover before, but rest assured, it’s completely normal. You will get stamped in and out of the country. During my experience, it took around 30 minutes from getting off the plane to reaching the arrivals area, although this can vary depending on queues and how busy the airport is.

A few important things to remember:

- Do not collect your checked luggage if it has been checked through to your final destination
- Keep your hand luggage with you
- Leave enough time for immigration, as queues can vary

Step 4: Find the Turkish Airlines’ TourIstanbul Desk

Once you have passed immigration and entered the arrivals hall, follow the signs for the TourIstanbul desk. I recommend going there as soon as possible rather than stopping for coffee or exploring Istanbul Airport first. Although the process is straightforward, tours operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and you need to register around 30 minutes before the tour departure time. From leaving the plane, walking through immigration and reaching the desk, I would allow approximately 30–45 minutes.

Step 5: Register for your tour

At the tour desk, you can ask for the different tour options available depending on your flights. The staff will verify your eligibility and ask to see:

- Your passport
- Both boarding passes
- Your onward flight details

The registration itself only took a few minutes. You’ll be giving a lanyard and card with the tour number and attractions that you’ll be visiting on the day. Be sure to just have this visible as it’s an easy marker for the staff to see who is part of the group. Once approved, I was given instructions on where to wait before boarding the coach.

Step 6: Wait for Departure

Depending on your tour departure time, you may have some waiting time before the group leaves.This is the perfect opportunity to:

- Charge your electronics
- Use the bathroom
- Fill up your water bottle
- Grab anything you need from your hand luggage
- Store larger cabin bags if needed

Remember: anything you take with you into Istanbul is your responsibility during the tour, so I recommend keeping your day bag as light as possible.

Step 7: Meet the tour group + start your tour

When it’s time to leave, everyone is escorted to the waiting coach. From this point onwards, everything is taken care of. On the coach, your guide will explain the itinerary, share information about Istanbul throughout the drive and keeps the group moving so you return to the airport comfortably before your flight.

Genuinely, couldn’t be easier. Not once did I have to think about traffic, metro routes or constantly checking my watch. I could simply enjoy seeing Istanbul for the first time and follow mindlessly!

Things you should know about TourIstanbul

What happens to your luggage during TourIstanbul?

Like most international flights, if your checked baggage is tagged all the way through to your final destination, you don’t need to collect it. Turkish Airlines transfers your checked luggage onto your connecting flight as normal, so you can simply leave it and enjoy the tour. That was exactly the case for me. My main backpack was checked through to my final destination and I didn’t have to think about it again until I landed after my connecting flight.

Your hand luggage is a little different. Anything you bring into Istanbul with you is your responsibility during the tour. Most people carried a small backpack or handbag while walking around the city.

My advice

Pack a small day bag before you fly. If your checked luggage goes straight through to your destination, you’ll only need things like:

- Your passport
- Wallet
- Phone
- Charger or power bank
- Water bottle
- Sunglasses
- Any medication you might need

Keeping your bag light makes the tour much more enjoyable.

Can I leave my cabin suitcase on the coach?

If you’re travelling with a larger cabin suitcase or roller bag, you can either leave it on the coach or at the locker storage at Istanbul Airport while you’re sightseeing. During my tour, several passengers did exactly that. However, as usual, the airlines make it clear that luggage left on the bus is at your own risk and they accept no responsibility for lost or damaged belongings. For ease, I’d recommend bringing any valuables with you in your daypack rather than your cabin suitcase.

Immigration and Visa Requirements

To join TourIstanbul you must legally enter Türkiye. Whether you need a visa depends entirely on your passport nationality.

Because Turkish Airlines’ TourIstanbul takes place outside the airport, you’ll need to officially enter Türkiye before joining the tour. That means passing through immigration just like any other visitor arriving in Istanbul. Personally, the whole process – from getting off the plane, walking through the airport and clearing passport control – took around 30 minutes. It wasn’t particularly difficult, although I didn’t find immigration staff especially helpful when I had questions about where I needed to go. If it’s your first time transiting through Istanbul Airport, don’t panic! The signage is generally good and once you reach arrivals, the TourIstanbul desk is easy enough to find.

Do you need a visa?

This depends entirely on your nationality. You can check your requirements here on Turkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or contact your local Turkiye consulate for more up to date information. The programme requires you to leave the airport, so you’ll need to meet Türkiye’s entry requirements just like any other visitor. Before you travel, always check the latest visa requirements for your passport rather than assuming you’ll be eligible.

Many travellers, including citizens of countries such as the UK, USA, Australia, Singapore and much of Europe, are exempted from visa up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Meaning, those visiting on a touristic purpose can enter the Republic of Turkiye without obtaining a visa in advance for short tourist visits.

Other nationalities may need to apply for an eVisa before travelling, while some may require a traditional visa. The important thing to remember is this: If you’re not legally allowed to enter Türkiye, you won’t be able to participate in TourIstanbul.

Don’t leave immigration until the last minute

Although my experience was relatively quick, immigration queues can vary enormously depending on how many flights arrive at the same time. I’d avoid planning everything down to the minute. Giving yourself a little extra time makes the whole experience far less stressful and reduces the risk of missing your tour departure.

What’s included?

Genuinely, I just thought the only things that would be included were transportation and the guide. However this was everything that was included:

- Airport Transfer + Transport
- English Speaking Guide
- Entry to any attractions listed
- A meal with a soda and bottle of water
- Water

The only thing you would need any Turkish Lira for would be tipping the guide and driver, purchasing any souvenirs or anything outside of the tours.

What happens if I want to wander myself?

Maybe your layover is longer than the tour and you want to explore Istanbul for longer… or you realize that this actually isn’t for you. Well, you can actually leave the group and wander on your own. The only thing that needs to be done is to notify your guide and you have to sign a release of liability before heading out on your own.

Essentially what that means is that you will be forfeiting your airport shuttle back and anything that happens while you’re on your own, is your own responsbility. This means if you miss your connecting flight because you were late… well, that is on you rather than Turkish Airlines.

What happens if I arrive later than the tour was scheduled to end and I miss my connecting flight?

Whilst the coach leaves in advance, sometimes unplanned things can happen! If you stayed with the tour until the end and the bus was late, Turkish Airlines will rebook you on the next flight with no extra cost.

Is the food free?

Actually, yes! I was really surprised about this.

Can children join?

Yes! I saw plenty of children join my group on TourIstanbul.

Can solo travellers join?

Yes, I was a solo traveller and it was completely fine! A good way to explore Istanbul.

Is WiFi available?

No, there is no connection. There may be the odd public WIFI or you can purchase an eSIM from Airalo or Saily! I got one for my layover and it worked perfectly!

What language is the guide?

As there are several nationalities joining, the tour is conducted in English.

What if I miss the bus back?

Unfortunately, if you miss the bus back, it is your own responsibility to find your way back to Istanbul International Airport.

Is Turkish Airlines’ TourIstanbul worth doing?

Before joining TourIstanbul, I was honestly a little sceptical. Free airport tours sound almost too good to be true! Either you’re rushed around, stuck seeing only the tourist highlights or spending more time worrying about logistics than actually enjoying yourself. After doing it myself, I was pleasantly surprised. It won’t replace spending a few days exploring Istanbul independently but for a long layover, it’s a genuinely easy way to experience the city without the stress of planning everything yourself.

The Pros

The biggest advantage of TourIstanbul is how effortless it is. Turkish Airlines takes care of the transport, the itinerary and the timing, meaning you don’t need to figure out how to get into Istanbul, navigate public transport or constantly worry about missing your connection. For first-time visitors, it’s also a great introduction to the city. Having a guide means you get some context behind the landmarks you’re seeing rather than simply arriving, taking a photo and moving on. Getting airport transfers, a guided tour, attraction visits and a meal included at no extra cost makes it one of the best-value layover experiences I’ve come across.

The Cons

The biggest downside is that you don’t have complete freedom. The itinerary is fixed, your time at each attraction is limited and you’ll be following the group’s schedule rather than exploring Istanbul at your own pace. You also need to work around the available tour times. Even with a long layover, you may not be able to join your preferred itinerary if your arrival and departure times don’t match the schedule. For travellers who prefer slow travel, hidden gems or wandering without a plan, arranging your own Istanbul layover might be a better option.

My Verdict

If you’re already going to be sitting inside Istanbul Airport for several hours, TourIstanbul is absolutely worth considering. It won’t give you the full Istanbul experience, but it gives you a chance to step outside the airport, see some incredible landmarks and make the most of time you would otherwise spend waiting. For a free programme offered during a layover, it’s hard to complain!!
